Non-Academic Misconduct

Non-academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, where a student engages in any of the following types of conduct on University property or in connection with a University activity:

theft, damage or destruction of property
unauthorized entry or presence on university property
fraud or impersonation
disruptive or dangerous behaviours to self or others
unlawful possession or use of alcohol that violates the university liquor policy
use or possession of illicit drugs
other activities that result in criminal charges or conviction or a court judgment

I’ve been accused. What do I do?

Before you respond to an accusation:

Read the policies carefully. You will be expected to know and understand the policies.

Read your notification letter/email carefully.

Consider the allegations that have been made. Do they make sense? Do I have enough information to properly respond? If not, ask for clarity before responding.

Know your rights. It the situation is not urgent, pressing, or involves an immediate safety risk, you have the right to:

Be notified that there is a decision being made that may impact you
Be treated respectfully, with dignity, and as innocent until they find otherwise
Be provided comprehensive details of the allegations. If you do not have enough information to properly respond, you have the right to ask for more information before a meeting or a deadline.
Be given a reasonable opportunity to respond and participate in a decision
An unbiased decision-maker who considers your individual circumstances
Bring an appropriate support person
A timely decision

Think about what how you would like to respond. Most students respond to the allegations by either 1) admitting to them, 2) denying them (and providing some information to back up their version of events) or 3) asking for more information before they respond.

Know your resources:

Contact the Ombudsperson for advice before responding or at any time during the process. Any correspondence or meetings with the Ombudsperson are confidential and any information discussed will not make it back to the decision-maker.
