The Office of the Ombudsperson is staffed by one full-time Ombudsperson for the entire calendar year and supported by the Ombudsperson Advisory Committee (the “OAC”), which consists of students, university staff, and faculty.
Between September and April, the Office will often employ a Work-Study student to assist with research and support tasks. If you would like to join the Ombuds team, please visit the Work-Study website or contact the Office.
Angus Shaw (he/him) is the current sitting Ombudsperson at the University of Victoria. He has held office since September of 2023.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) at the University of Calgary in International Relations and German Studies, Angus completed a law degree (JD) at the University of British Columbia. He was called to the British Columbia Bar shortly thereafter, however he does not provide legal advice to visitors to the Office of the Ombudsperson. Angus has gained valuable experience working with people in conflicts through his work with the Indigenous Community Legal Clinic in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, through UBC’s student union as their Advocate, and as President of a non-profit society creating positive change for the LGBTQ2IA+ community.
Angus was raised on traditional territories of the Peoples of Treaty 7 and now works and lives between between the traditional and unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt), W̱SÁNEĆ, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. He respects, acknowledges, and honours these Peoples and heritages.
